Mage Guide

See this is what boredom does to you >_>! This is my guide for a PvP mage. And I know at lvl 15x you max basically all your good mage spells so there is no such thing as ‘AoE’ Mage and ‘PvP’ Mage and all that stuff but this is for people who want to get straight into pvping!!

So basically if you’re looking on information on how to play a pvp mage here’s some info:

Gear and Gems
You wanna use topaz's, not diamonds, not rubies. This will not only increase the power of your self buffs, but also give you more resistance to getting stunned, which comes especially in handy when you pvp scouts since their stun has a greater range than yours. Topaz's will also add more attack then diamonds with high attack power weapons.

The most preferable gear is 5/20 (5 strength; 20 attack), 4/15 (4 intelligence; 15 attack) and 15/15 (15 AP; 15 Crit) you need the most attack you can get from your gear.

Stats
I would start with 2:1 (int:str) con capped at 50 when your a noob (below lvl 100). then go 3:2, and con capped at 150 or so. However I tend to add stats to what I'm experiencing. For example, if I can't hit hawkers in tg - add con! If I am dieing to mobs too easily - add str! Spells too weak? - More int!

Once you get to a decent level start pumping up your SEN, I would recommend starting when your str is around 180, and con around 150. Your final build should be:

300 Int: 200 str: 200 sen: 170 con: 50 dex.

Of course you can put your own variant on it - for e.g. put more/less STR, less/more SEN and less con - However I wouldn't recommend STR less then 140, con less then 150, SEN less then 100.

Int - Spell Damage! MUST max, mages have weak attack and INT gives the most attack out of all the stats

Dex – I dunno why but this stat helped me in junon cf dodging green mobs, also I was able to stun before most people. For example if the opponent and I go for a stun then I was able to stun first (well at least that’s what someone made me think). Keep it around 50 or so.

Sen - Yes this stat is important, because as you get higher, your damage gets less, but if you add SEN you can increase the damage of your staff stun, one of the 3 spamming skills - Lightning, magma burn, staff stun. Also helps with damage when attacking mobs with a staff, gets them in a kind of a "crit-lock" because most staffs are +2 attack speed.

But you might be saying, * this iz uzeless i would rather add str since it gives def and AP!!!!* Well, If you remove 200 SEN and just put all those points into str this is what you gain:

- Additional 83 str
- 33 attack
- 29 defence

What do mages do? That's right, they skill spam! 33 attack/29 defence is not worth the 200 sen you gain, and the minor loss in attack power and defence will be compesated by the high staff stun damages. Without it you will be doing 40-damage staff stuns. Source - http://statcalculator.freehostia.com/v2/

Con - Ultimate waste of a stat (adds no attack power) but unfortunately you need this to hit those damned hawkers - especially those full (9)ed 60 dodge ones. This should be high, as much as your str (around 150+), remember if you can't hit /do damage to anything you might as well go naked.

Skills

When you first become a muse you will notice two masteries - Spell Mastery and Staff Mastery. So at this point you will think *omfg wich d0 i get?!?! * It's simple - get Spell Mastery first! and keep Staff Mastery low! Spell mastery has all the useful skills for your pvping needs - debuffs such as mild, silence, magma burn, freeze bolt, ice bang etc. Where-as staff mastery has the weaker skills and aoe’s.

Pre-70

So from 10-70 this is what I recommend for a pvp mage:

Staff Mastery
Keep staff mastery as low as possible

Get Staff stun lvl 1, it helps with controlling mobs

If you are having trouble lvling (i.e. slow boring and dull) get windstorm! (but keep at lvl 1 :x). It helps you lvl much faster! Personally I take windstorm at lvl 1 by lvl 2x for aquas

Also as a 'filler' spell you should get mana bolt at lvl 1 or so as well

Spell Mastery
Of course this is the most important mastery lol so:
Ice bolt - lvl 5
Spell Mastery - lvl 10
Lightning - lvl 5
Fire Ring – lvl 5
Mild - Keep this low or don't really add it at all won't be needing it until lvl 100+ @ p7

Meditation
Ok I know it's not the best thing to get buffs at an early lvl but it's always useful to get the speed buff (at least that's what I did) sure helps with running around town and if you're lazy and poor like me and can't afford a cart it helps as well =p. Also it is important to get heal - keep this at lvl 1 before 70.

Post-70

After lvl 70 you should play around yourself and learn from your mistakes that’s what makes it fun lol (but don't be stupid and add charm or something to your mage pl0x). However if you do need help I recommend you get these skills first:

Ice Bang level 1 (Helps with lvling)
Fire Ring lvl 5
Magma Burn lvl 8
Freeze Bolt lvl 8
Lightning lvl 10 (omg has aoe stun uber fun lols)
Heal lvl 3
Staff Stun lvl 6

- Try level all of these skills at the same time (i.e. don't just focus on one)

By lvl 10x or so you should try and get,
Mild lvl 6 (this adds the slow speed debuff as well) and Silence - for lvling at p7 (mammoths will do about 70ish damage to you when you debuff you, opposed to 200ish) and PvPing at lvl 13x+, this is also one of the most powerful debuffs behind silence.

Of course once you have done that max all your single-target spells and debuffs, along with your muse buffs.

And of course the most important self buffs are:
Accuracy buff - To hit hawkers
Defence-ring buff - This is important since you will notice that you won’t last long during a PvP once you are getting hit due to your crap def. However – combined with mild and this skill that should not be a problem!

Summon Mastery
Trash and waste of sp - yeah I know I’m exaggerating. But seriously get it after maxing everything else if you don't you'll regret it, because you can't summon mobs in TG and they LEACH argh!.

My PvP strategy

Theres no real point to PvPing pre-130 since you have no decent debuffs/spells but after 130 this is basically the strategy you should use:

Lightning, Silence, Mild,PWNNNNNNN!!

(You can shove a fire-ring in there if you have time)

As soon as the guy 'wakes up' you should immediately follow through with staff-stun, then spam all your magma burn, freeze bolt, luna stone, etc etc. If he/she wakes up again use lightning.

Remember if you get your stun timing wrong (you use another stun too early) then once the oppenant awakens, your stun skills will be still cooling down. It’s always good to practice around tg pvping naked (rofl) and stuff to get all your skill timing right and see what debuffs are good for each class.

Knight/Champ
The knight and champ should not be able to hit you, once you use Lightning, Silence, Mild, they are completely screwed since they rely on their skills to deal damage (especially knights). If they do hit you they would probably do around 80 damage – which is hardly anything. Just follow through with a couple of magma burns, freeze bolts and staff stuns and it should be dead. The only challenge posed by a knight/champ would be if they added INT, in that case you will have a hard time stunning it and debuffing the darn thing. You just got to rely on your own high int to increase the possibility of stunning/debuffing it – another reason why topaz’s are handy.

Artisan/Bourg
This should be extremely easy to kill – you could even kill a few bourgs and artisans 20+ lvls above you - naked. Just keep them stunned, silenced and milded because even their normal hit hurts.

Clerics
Basically if the cleric has a t7 set and well refined gear and you don’t, you are screwed. You won’t be able stun it, won’t be able to silence it due its m-def – give up rofls. But in saying that there are some clerics that are not that good should be an easy kill, some clerics you can even beat that are a couple of lvls above you. In this case the most important skills are silence (so it stops spam healing!), lightning and staff stun. You will need to time your stuns right so it does not have a chance of hitting you (they are buffed so it hurts). Just hope none of your stuns miss >.<

Scout
One of the only classes that mages are doomed to loose. The match mainly relies on if the scout stuns or doesn’t stun. The more INT you have the more likely you will resist the stun and come out on top. So basically when starting, let the scout attack you with eagle shot (there’s no point doing anything about it because it has a more range than lightning). If you evade it – Woohoo! lightning, silence, mild, DEAD! If you don’t – hope to hell that you have enough def to endure a triple shot (if the scouts not stupid enough to use something stupid like trap shot or something), if you do survive this quickly run up to the scout and use lightning, mild, silence, etc, etc… hopefully if this works it should be doing low damage to you and you should be able to finish it off quickly.

Raider
Haven’t really PvPed raiders a lot but I guess, you’ll have to pre-click, once the raider uses triple (if he uses poison knife or something he’s stupid), keep spamming lightning. Once he is stunned use mild and silence and laugh at his damage and a-speed (it will be extremely low since katars rely on a-speed and have low damage). Should be a quick and easy kill after that.
